Instagram Unveils Youth Accounts: A New Safety Layer for Teens

In response to growing concerns about online safety for minors, Instagram has launched its Youth Account feature. This update introduces a set of automatic restrictions and parental oversight tools aimed at creating a safer, more controlled digital experience for teenagers.

Automatic Private Mode for All Under-18 Users

Every new and existing account belonging to a user under 18 will be switched to private by default. Only approved followers can see posts, like, or comment. Users aged 16–17 may choose to go public, but those under 16 need parental permission to change this setting.

Nighttime Notification Restrictions

To promote healthy sleep habits, Instagram will pause all notifications for youth accounts from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. local time. This reduces late-night distractions and helps teens maintain a regular sleep schedule.

Enhanced Content Filters and Message Controls

Youth accounts will not see content involving nudity, self-harm, or other sensitive material. Direct messages from people not followed are automatically blocked, limiting exposure to harmful interactions. Teens can also choose interest-based content themes (e.g., art, sports) for a more positive browsing experience.

Expanded Parental Monitoring Tools

Parents gain access to a dashboard showing screen time, daily usage limits, and the ability to block access during specific hours (like school time). They can also view the teen's recent contact list and the content themes their child follows, enabling more informed guidance.

Age Verification to Prevent Falsification

To stop teens from lying about their age, Instagram now requires video selfies for age estimation or, in some cases, official ID documents. This ensures the protections of Youth Accounts are not bypassed.

Phased Global Rollout

The feature will be deployed in stages: new accounts from September will default to Youth Account settings. Existing accounts in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia will be updated between October and November. The rest of the world will see the change by January next year.

Balancing Security with User Experience

While the private default may impact teen influencers' follower growth, Instagram allows 16–17-year-olds to opt for public accounts, striking a balance between safety and autonomy. This move aligns with legislation like the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and sets a precedent for other platforms to follow.
